Day 2 : JOURNEY FROM QUITO TO THE MINDO CLOUD FOREST

After a hearty breakfast, we bid farewell to the historic streets of Quito and embark on a scenic transfer to the lush paradise of the Mindo Cloud Forest. The journey, approximately an hour and a half, unveils an extraordinary transition of landscapes as we leave behind the bustling city and ascend into a world of misty canopies, vibrant greenery, and abundant wildlife.

As we drive, watch the environment shift dramatically—from Andean highlands to the surreal, emerald tapestry of the cloud forest. The crisp air grows cooler and richer with the scent of orchids and bromeliads clinging to ancient trees. Butterflies dance beside the road, and if you're lucky, you might spot a flash of colour as a hummingbird zips by.

Upon arrival, we check in to the enchanting Sachatamia Lodge, our serene base for the next two nights. Nestled deep within the heart of the Mindo Cloud Forest, this eco-lodge is surrounded by pristine nature reserves, offering an unrivalled immersion into one of the world’s most biologically diverse regions.

The remainder of the day is at leisure to relax and breathe in the pure, refreshing air. Perhaps wander along nearby nature trails, listen to the chorus of tropical birds, or simply unwind on the lodge’s veranda, soaking up the magical atmosphere of this hidden Eden.

Day 3 : EXPLORE THE MINDO CLOUD FOREST

This morning, we awake to the symphony of nature echoing through the misty trees of the Mindo Cloud Forest. Nestled within the stunning private reserve of Sachatamia Lodge, we are perfectly positioned to embrace a full day of discovery amidst one of the most biodiverse regions on Earth.

After a leisurely breakfast, the day is yours to explore the enchanting landscapes surrounding the lodge. Wander through trails draped in moss and alive with colour, where the diversity of species is simply astounding. Bird enthusiasts will be in paradise as vibrant flashes of wings dart between the trees. Keep a watchful eye for the dazzling violet-tailed sylph and the majestic velvet-purple coronet, two of the most sought-after hummingbirds in the region.

But the avian wonders do not stop there. Listen for the deep, resonant call of the broad-billed motmot and catch glimpses of the elusive masked trogon with its brilliant plumage hiding among the dense canopy. Each trail offers a new encounter, whether with exotic birds, delicate orchids, or shimmering butterflies dancing through shafts of sunlight piercing the mist.

For those seeking a slower pace, simply relaxing at the lodge offers its own rewards—enjoy uninterrupted views of the lush forest while sipping Ecuadorian coffee, and let the magic of the cloud forest gently unfold around you.

Tonight, drift off to sleep with the sounds of nature as your lullaby, ready for more adventures to come.

Day 4 : TRANSFER TO MAQUIPUCUNA RESERVE

This morning, after a peaceful breakfast surrounded by the lush beauty of the Mindo Cloud Forest, we bid farewell to Sachatamia Lodge and set off on a short but scenic journey to the magnificent Maquipucuna Reserve.

The drive takes us deeper into the Andean foothills, where layers of mist weave through ancient trees and the air grows richer with the scent of the forest. Upon arrival at the charming Maquipucuna Ecolodge, nestled within a private reserve, we check in and prepare for an afternoon immersed in nature’s wonders.

After settling into our rustic yet comfortable accommodation, we head out on foot to begin our first exciting excursion into the heart of the Maquipucuna Reserve. With expert local guides leading the way, we wander through lush trails in search of the extraordinary wildlife that calls this untouched corner of Ecuador home. Keep your senses alert—you may encounter colourful tanagers, howler monkeys swinging overhead, or even catch a glimpse of the elusive Andean spectacled bear if the season is right.

As we explore, the rich biodiversity and serene atmosphere of Maquipucuna unfold before us, offering an authentic and intimate cloud forest experience unlike any other.

Day 5 : DISCOVER THE WILDLIFE OF MAQUIPUCUNA RESERVE

Awake to the soothing sounds of the cloud forest as the morning mist slowly lifts over the lush canopy of the Maquipucuna Reserve. Today, we dedicate our time to fully exploring this pristine paradise on foot, venturing deep into the forest trails where nature thrives in its purest form.

Armed with binoculars and a spirit of adventure, we set off in search of the reserve’s spectacular birdlife. Among the highlights is the dazzling toucan barbet, with its vibrant plumage and distinctive call echoing through the trees. Keen eyes may also spot the magnificent plate-billed mountain toucan, an icon of Ecuador’s cloud forests, and the resplendent golden-headed quetzal, a shimmering emerald and gold jewel hidden within the misty foliage.

The magic of Maquipucuna extends beyond its avian treasures. As we wander through ancient trails carpeted with moss and lined with orchids, we may encounter shy agoutis scurrying through the undergrowth or the elusive, nocturnal kinkajou nestled high in the treetops. Every step through the reserve offers the chance for a rare and wondrous encounter.

Between our adventures, we gather for meals at the lodge’s charming open-air restaurant, a peaceful setting where the calls of the forest accompany our dining experience. Over fresh, locally sourced dishes, we share stories, laughter, and the highlights of our unforgettable day in the cloud forest.

Day 6 : TRANSFER TO ANTISANA & EXPLORE CHAKANA RESERVE

This morning, we ascend into the breathtaking highlands of Ecuador as we journey toward the Antisana Ecological Reserve, a dramatic shift in landscape and altitude. The drive, taking approximately four hours, is a scenic adventure in itself—winding through valleys, past remote Andean villages, and offering ever-changing vistas of towering peaks and open skies.

By midday, we arrive at our next base—Tambo Condor, a rustic yet atmospheric lodge perched amid the wild beauty of the high Andes. After a warm welcome and a satisfying lunch, we check in and take a moment to breathe in the crisp mountain air before heading out to explore one of the region’s most unique ecosystems: the Chakana Reserve.

This protected area is part of the specialist high-altitude grasslands known as the páramo—a rare and fragile biome that exists above the treeline yet below the snow-capped peaks. Covered in golden grasses, cushion plants, and scattered shrubs, this stark yet stunning environment is rich in life and ecological significance.

Our main focus here is the elusive and iconic spectacled bear, South America's only bear species. While sightings are never guaranteed, the Chakana Reserve supports a healthy population, and with some luck and patience, we may be rewarded with a rare glimpse of this shy creature in its natural habitat.

As the sun dips behind the peaks and casts long shadows across the páramo, we return to Tambo Condor for a restful evening surrounded by silence, stars, and the majesty of the high Andes.

Day 7 : WILDLIFE ADVENTURES IN CHAKANA RESERVE & CAYAMBE COCA RESERVE

After a peaceful night in the high Andes, we rise early to seize a second opportunity to explore the breathtaking Chakana Reserve. This morning’s excursion gives us another chance to spot the iconic spectacled bear, along with the many other remarkable species that thrive in this unique high-altitude ecosystem. As the morning mist lifts, keep your binoculars ready—you never know when a bear might emerge from the golden grasses or forest edges!

After an exhilarating morning, we return to the lodge for lunch, recharging with hearty Andean flavours before setting off on our next adventure to the majestic Cayambe Coca Reserve. This vast and rugged wilderness offers yet another exceptional habitat for the elusive spectacled bear, and if fortune smiles upon us, we may even catch a rare glimpse of the mysterious mountain tapir, one of South America's most endangered mammals.

The landscape here is a dramatic patchwork of high-altitude páramo grasslands, misty forest edges, and sweeping vistas stretching to distant snow-capped peaks. As we explore, we scan carefully not only for mammals but also for some of the Andes’ most spectacular birdlife. Among the avian highlights are the soaring Andean condor, the graceful Andean gull, and the delicate yet vibrant black-tailed trainbearer, a species of hummingbird with its distinctive long tail streaming behind it.

After a thrilling afternoon immersed in the wild beauty of the Andes, we transfer to Guango Lodge—a cosy and welcoming retreat set amidst enchanting forest surroundings—where we settle in for a restful evening, still buzzing with the day's extraordinary encounters.

Day 8 : BIRDWATCHING IN CAYAMBE COCA RESERVE & TRANSFER TO SAN ISIDRO LODGE

We begin the morning with an immersive exploration of the trails surrounding Guango Lodge, situated within the magical Cayambe Coca Reserve. Shrouded in mist and alive with the calls of countless birds, the forest here offers some of the finest birdwatching opportunities in the Andes.

Following the winding trails, we keep a sharp eye on the rivers, where the elusive torrent duck rides the rushing waters with effortless grace. Along the verdant forest edges, colourful flocks of mountain tanagers flit among the trees, while the striking forms of trogons and the vibrant beaks of toucans add flashes of colour to the misty green backdrop. Each step reveals another avian wonder, making the morning a true paradise for nature lovers and photographers alike.

After a hearty lunch at the lodge, we bid farewell to the high cloud forest and begin our journey eastward. Our drive descends the dramatic eastern slopes of the Andes, passing through layers of lush vegetation and spectacular mountain vistas. In just an hour and a half, we arrive at the enchanting San Isidro Lodge, tucked deep within the cloud forest at around 2,000 metres above sea level.

Nestled amidst towering trees and mist-laden foliage, San Isidro Lodge offers a tranquil escape into another world of rich biodiversity. After settling into our comfortable accommodation, we take time to relax and listen to the sounds of the forest—a preview of the incredible wildlife encounters that await us over the coming days.

Day 9 : WILDLIFE AND BIRDWATCHING ADVENTURES AT SAN ISIDRO LODGE

Awake to the peaceful calls of the cloud forest as dawn's first light filters through the towering trees surrounding San Isidro Lodge. Today promises a full day of exploration, with time dedicated to uncovering the rich biodiversity that makes this hidden gem one of Ecuador’s premier nature reserves.

Armed with binoculars and a sense of wonder, we set out along the intricate network of trails that weave through the lush forest. Our primary focus is the remarkable birdlife that thrives here. With patience and a keen eye, we hope to spot the rare and impressive giant antpitta, whose booming calls echo mysteriously through the undergrowth. Overhead, flashes of colour signal the presence of the white-capped parrot and the brilliant saffron-crowned tanager. Along the lower branches and forest edges, we search for the tiny but vibrant rufous-crowned tody-flycatcher, a delightful and sought-after species for birdwatchers.

Yet the wonders of San Isidro are not limited to its birds. The reserve also shelters a wide array of mammals, though these elusive creatures require an extra measure of luck to encounter. Keep your senses sharp for the playful movements of a white-fronted capuchin swinging through the trees or the tiny form of a pudu—the world's smallest deer—moving silently among the ferns. Nightfall may bring glimpses of the enigmatic night monkey, and if fortune favours us greatly, we might even spot the shy and endangered spectacled bear wandering through its ancient forest home.

Today is all about immersion—moving at a slow, observant pace, allowing the magic of the cloud forest to reveal itself in unexpected moments and unforgettable encounters.

Day 10 : TRANSFER TO COCA AND JOURNEY TO THE NAPO WILDLIFE CENTRE

Today marks a thrilling transition in our adventure as we leave the misty cloud forests behind and descend into the heart of the Amazon Basin. Departing San Isidro Lodge early in the morning, we travel by road through an ever-changing landscape—lush valleys give way to dense tropical greenery as we approach the vibrant riverside town of Coca.

Situated on the banks of the mighty Napo River, Coca is the main gateway to the Amazon rainforest. Here, we board a covered motorboat and embark on a remarkable journey downstream, cruising along the wide, sediment-rich waters of the Napo. As we glide past the riverbanks, keep an eye out for colourful kingfishers, herons, and even the occasional glimpse of pink river dolphins playing in the currents.

After an exhilarating boat ride, we transfer to smaller, hand-paddled canoes that allow us to penetrate deeper into the wilderness. The pace slows, the air grows heavier with humidity, and the sounds of the jungle envelop us—chirps, rustles, and distant calls hinting at the hidden life all around. Navigating narrow waterways, we continue into the spectacular Yasuní National Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and one of the most biodiverse regions on the planet.

Our final destination is the renowned Napo Wildlife Centre, an award-winning eco-lodge owned and operated by the local Kichwa Añangu community. Nestled deep within pristine rainforest, the lodge offers an extraordinary base from which to experience the Amazon’s astounding flora and fauna in comfort and style. After settling into our cabins, surrounded by the sounds of the jungle, we have time to relax and absorb the magical atmosphere of our new surroundings.

Day 11 : FIRST EXPLORATIONS AT NAPO WILDLIFE CENTRE

Wake up to the extraordinary sounds of the Amazon rainforest as the first light filters through the dense canopy at the magnificent Napo Wildlife Centre. Today marks the beginning of our in-depth exploration of this breathtaking region, one of the richest biodiversity hotspots on Earth.

You don't even have to venture far from the lodge to begin experiencing unforgettable wildlife encounters. Along the tranquil waterways and nearby trails, relatively well-habituated species reveal themselves with surprising ease. Look for the prehistoric-looking hoatzin as they clamber awkwardly along the riverbanks, while several species of playful monkeys—such as golden-mantled tamarins and squirrel monkeys—swing energetically through the trees above.

Our expert local guides, joined by Mike, lead us on immersive excursions that showcase the best the rainforest has to offer. This first day promises a feast for the senses as we step into a world alive with colour, movement, and sound.

Day 12 : CLAY LICKS, CANOPY TOWERS AND JUNGLE ADVENTURES

Today offers a variety of unforgettable Amazonian experiences. One of the highlights is visiting the famous clay licks, natural mineral-rich deposits where dazzling flocks of amazons and parrots gather in a riot of colour and sound. Watching these vibrant birds whirl and jostle for space is a true spectacle of nature not to be missed.

Later, we ascend to one of the lodge’s towering canopy platforms, rising high above the forest floor. From this unique perspective, we gain a bird’s-eye view of the lush treetops, often spotting toucans, tanagers, and perhaps even scarlet macaws gliding between the branches. The panoramic view allows us to appreciate the immense scale and beauty of the rainforest from a breathtaking new angle.

As night falls, we have the chance to embark on a thrilling night walk. The rainforest transforms after dark, with a chorus of frogs filling the air and new, secretive creatures emerging from their daytime hiding places. Expect encounters with exotic amphibians, camouflaged reptiles, and the intricate world of invertebrates, all illuminated by the soft beams of our headlamps.

Day 13 : DEEPER INTO THE AMAZON WILDERNESS

On our final full day at the Napo Wildlife Centre, we dive even deeper into the wonders of the Amazon. With the expert knowledge of our local guides and Mike, we explore new trails and waterways, seeking out the full diversity of the rainforest’s inhabitants.

Beyond the dazzling birdlife and charismatic primates, today's discoveries may include encounters with rare reptiles sunning themselves on fallen logs, iridescent butterflies flashing among the undergrowth, or strange and beautiful amphibians tucked under broad leaves. The rich flora is ever-present, with towering kapok trees, delicate orchids, and vines weaving intricate green cathedrals overhead.

Every moment spent here brings new revelations, from the delicate detail of a frog’s skin to the thunderous wingbeat of a startled heron. As the day winds down, we reflect on the sheer magic of the Amazon, a place where every step unveils another secret of the natural world.

Day 14 : RETURN JOURNEY FROM NAPO WILDLIFE CENTRE TO QUITO

As dawn breaks over the Amazon canopy, we bid farewell to the magical Napo Wildlife Centre, our unforgettable sanctuary deep within the rainforest. After breakfast, we board a motorised canoe and begin our serene journey back upstream along the majestic Napo River, retracing our path through the mist-laden waterways, with the sights and sounds of the jungle lingering in the air.

Upon reaching the riverside town of Coca, we transfer to the airport for our domestic flight to Quito. The short but scenic flight offers sweeping aerial views of Ecuador’s varied landscapes, from the dense green sprawl of the Amazon Basin to the towering peaks of the Andes once more.

On arrival in Quito, a private transfer will be waiting to take us to the comfortable Garden Hotel San Jose, conveniently located near the airport. Here, you can unwind and reflect on the extraordinary experiences of the past days, surrounded by the cool mountain air and peaceful gardens that offer a gentle contrast to the lush, humid rainforest we have left behind.
