Day 1 : JOURNEY FROM NEW YORK TO THE HEART OF COSTA RICA: ARRIVAL IN SAN JOSE

Your adventure begins today as you board your flight from NEW YORK to the vibrant capital of Costa Rica, San José. Upon arrival this evening, you’ll be warmly welcomed and transferred to your comfortable hotel, located just outside the bustling city centre. Settle in and relax after your long-haul journey, preparing for the incredible experiences that await you across this lush and diverse country.

Day 2 : WATERFALLS, WILDLIFE AND SCENIC DRIVE TO SARAPIQUí

After breakfast, leave San José behind and head north into the lush countryside. Our first stop is the enchanting La Paz Waterfall Gardens in the picturesque La Virgen del Socorro area. This privately-owned wildlife sanctuary offers a stunning collection of five cascading waterfalls, set amidst a magical mix of cloud forest and rainforest. Wander through the butterfly observatory and vibrant gardens, home to a dazzling variety of middle-elevation bird species. This area is also a true haven for hummingbirds — attracting 26 of the 47 species found across Costa Rica.

Continuing eastwards, we journey across the dramatic volcanic zone before descending into the dense forests of the Caribbean lowlands. Spend the afternoon immersed in birdwatching, seeking out tropical species as we pass from mountainous terrain into lush lowland rainforest. By late afternoon, we arrive at our welcoming lodge nestled deep in the Sarapiquí region, where the rainforest whispers through the trees.

Day 3 : BIRDWATCHING AND WILDLIFE ENCOUNTERS IN LA SELVA

Today promises an extraordinary immersion into the wonders of the rainforest. After an early breakfast, we head out to explore the renowned La Selva Biological Reserve — a vast expanse of protected lowland rainforest on Costa Rica’s Caribbean slope. With over 400 species of birds recorded here, La Selva is considered one of the world's premier birdwatching destinations. Keep your binoculars ready for possible sightings of colourful toucans, trogons, motmots and many others!

The reserve is also home to an abundance of fascinating mammals, including mantled howler monkeys, Central American agoutis, collared peccaries and the slow-moving three-toed sloth. Every corner of the jungle teems with life, offering unforgettable encounters at every turn.

In the afternoon, enjoy leisurely walks along the trails surrounding our lodge, where you may hear the distinctive calls of little and great tinamous, glimpse the brilliant feathers of a keel-billed toucan, and with luck, spot the elusive bare-necked umbrellabird — a rare and extraordinary find.

Day 4 : WILDLIFE CRUISE AND SCENIC JOURNEY TO ARENAL VOLCANO

After breakfast, we set off on a gentle boat trip along the picturesque San Carlos River, a serene waterway teeming with tropical wildlife. Keep your eyes peeled for sightings of herons, kingfishers, iguanas, and perhaps even caimans relaxing along the riverbanks.

Following our cruise, we continue westward, travelling along the lush lower slopes of the volcanic mountain range. Our journey leads us toward the breathtaking landscapes surrounding Lake Arenal — a region rich in biodiversity where the Caribbean-slope forests meet the mighty backdrop of Arenal Volcano.

This afternoon, we enjoy a guided nature walk in the grounds around our lodge, immersing ourselves in the sights and sounds of the tropical forest. This area is home to an extraordinary range of birdlife and wildlife, offering wonderful photographic opportunities and the chance to experience the vibrant pulse of Costa Rica's wilderness up close.

Day 5 : ARENAL HANGING BRIDGES AND RAINFOREST ADVENTURE

Today we experience one of Costa Rica’s most iconic eco-adventures — the stunning Arenal Hanging Bridges Park. Here, a three-kilometre network of fixed and suspension bridges allows us to explore the rainforest from exhilarating new heights, with some bridges reaching up to 45 metres above the forest floor!

As we walk the trail through the dense canopy, we gain a fascinating perspective on life above and below the trees. Look out for a kaleidoscope of tropical birds, playful monkeys swinging through the branches, vividly coloured frogs, and perhaps even the elusive sloth resting high overhead. The views of Arenal Volcano from the hanging bridges are simply unforgettable — a true highlight of any Costa Rica adventure tour.

Spend the remainder of the day relaxing at the lodge or independently exploring the natural beauty of the La Fortuna area, famous for its hot springs, waterfalls, and spectacular vistas.

Day 6 : JOURNEY TO THE GULF OF NICOYA: BIRDING AND WILDLIFE ENCOUNTERS

After breakfast, we continue our adventure westward toward Costa Rica’s stunning Pacific Coast. Our destination is the beautiful Gulf of Nicoya, where tropical landscapes meet vibrant waterways rich in biodiversity.

Upon arrival at our charming lodge near Abangaritos, we enjoy some leisurely birdwatching around the lodge grounds and along the nearby Tempisque River. This area is a true haven for wildlife enthusiasts. Among the species we may encounter are the striking roseate spoonbill, the elegant little blue heron, and the stealthy bare-throated tiger heron. Keep an eye out too for large American crocodiles basking along the riverbanks, along with colourful green iguanas, black iguanas, and playful troops of white-faced capuchins and mantled howler monkeys.

Day 7 : BOAT SAFARI AND WETLAND BIRDING AT HACIENDA SOLIMAR

This morning, we take to the water once again with a scenic boat trip along the Bebedero River into the heart of Palo Verde National Park. This is a birdwatcher’s paradise, with the opportunity to spot powerful raptors such as the crested caracara, common black hawk, peregrine falcon, and the majestic osprey. Look out too for the agile laughing falcon and the swift mangrove swallow flitting over the river.

In the afternoon, we explore the extraordinary wetlands of Hacienda Solimar — an 11,000-hectare ranch and one of Costa Rica’s premier birding destinations. Here, amongst the shimmering marshes and grassy plains, we hope to encounter an incredible variety of wetland birds, crowned by the mighty jabirú — the largest stork in the Americas and a truly unforgettable sight.

Day 8 : JOURNEY SOUTH: TARCOLES RIVER AND SCARLET MACAWS

After breakfast, we journey south along Costa Rica’s sun-drenched Pacific coast, travelling through lush countryside and keeping a keen eye out for birdlife along the way. Our destination is the renowned Carara National Park region — a true meeting point between dry forest and humid rainforest ecosystems, making it one of the richest areas for biodiversity in the country.

Later in the day, we visit the famous road bridge spanning the Tarcoles River. Here, we wait quietly for one of Costa Rica’s most breathtaking spectacles — the return of vibrant scarlet macaws as they glide across the evening sky, heading back to their roosts in the mangrove forests as the sun dips toward the horizon.

Day 9 : TARCOLES RIVER SAFARI AND CARARA NATIONAL PARK

This morning, we embark on an unforgettable boat safari along the legendary Tarcoles River and into the tranquil waterways of the Guacalillo Estuary. This region is home to the largest population of American crocodiles in Central America, and we are likely to see these impressive creatures basking along the muddy banks.

The mangroves and tidal mudflats also create a paradise for birdwatchers. We search for an array of freshwater species, waders and shorebirds. During this season, we often spot wintering visitors from North America, including delicate sandpipers, lively terns, sleek black skimmers, and the majestic magnificent frigatebirds soaring overhead.

In the afternoon, we return to Carara National Park for further exploration. Famous for its populations of scarlet macaws and stunning diversity of tropical birds, Carara offers another wonderful opportunity to witness colourful wildlife at close range amidst the dense greenery of one of Costa Rica’s most precious national parks.

Day 10 : INTO THE HIGHLANDS: JOURNEY TO SAN GERARDO DE DOTA

Today, we leave the lowlands behind and ascend into the dramatic heights of the Cerro de la Muerte Highlands. Our destination is the enchanting village of San Gerardo de Dota, tucked away in a steep, pristine valley in the heart of the Talamanca Mountains at an altitude of around 2,200 metres.

Upon arrival, we settle into our beautifully located lodge nestled within the lush cloud forest. Here, the crisp mountain air is filled with birdsong, and dazzling species such as the vibrant collared redstart and the shimmering magnificent hummingbird and fiery-throated hummingbird can often be spotted flitting among the trees and gardens.

Day 11 : SEARCHING FOR THE RESPLENDENT QUETZAL AND HIGHLAND WONDERS

We rise early this morning to search for one of Costa Rica’s most iconic and sought-after birds — the breathtaking resplendent quetzal. The cloud forests surrounding our lodge offer one of the best opportunities to spot this magnificent species, often just steps away from our accommodation as they feed on wild avocados in the early morning light.

Later, we venture deeper into the region’s diverse habitats. We explore ancient, towering oak forests, where every corner of the misty woodland reveals a new natural wonder. We also experience the rare and otherworldly páramo ecosystem — a high-altitude tundra-like landscape with strange, stunted vegetation uniquely adapted to the harsh mountain climate. The day is filled with opportunities for spectacular wildlife sightings and unforgettable highland scenery.

Day 12 : TAPANTI NATIONAL PARK AND RETURN TO SAN JOSE

After breakfast, we begin our journey back toward the Central Valley, but not without one final immersion into Costa Rica’s stunning natural beauty. This morning, we visit the lush and lesser-known Tapantí National Park, a verdant haven of cloud forest, cascading rivers, and vibrant wildlife. Here, gentle trails offer the chance to spot colourful tanagers, trogons, hummingbirds, and perhaps even the elusive silky-flycatcher hidden among the emerald foliage.

Following our exploration of Tapantí, we continue our drive to the lively capital city of San José, where we spend the evening reflecting on the incredible memories and unforgettable wildlife encounters experienced throughout our journey across Costa Rica’s breathtaking landscapes.

Day 13 : AT LEISURE IN SAN JOSE

Today is yours to enjoy at your own pace. After days filled with rich wildlife encounters and breathtaking landscapes, take this opportunity to relax and reflect on your incredible journey across Costa Rica. You may wish to simply unwind at the hotel, enjoy a leisurely stroll through San José, or perhaps pick up a few last-minute souvenirs at the colourful local markets.

For those who wish to explore a little further, San José offers fascinating museums, bustling plazas, charming cafés, and parks alive with Costa Rican culture. However you choose to spend your day, it’s a wonderful way to round off an unforgettable adventure before your journey home.

Wildlife and Landscapes of Costa Rica

Costa Rica offers one of the world’s greatest concentrations of biodiversity, wrapped in landscapes of breathtaking beauty. Our carefully crafted route takes you from misty mountain cloud forests and active volcanoes to serene tropical rivers, lush rainforests, and sun-drenched coastal wetlands — all teeming with life at every turn.

Scenic Diversity

Travel through Costa Rica’s dramatic range of habitats, from soaring volcanic peaks and pristine rainforest canopies to sparkling rivers, golden beaches, and cloud-shrouded highlands. Every region reveals a different face of this extraordinary country, offering spectacular vistas and countless opportunities for wildlife encounters and photography.

Walking and Trails

Much of our journey unfolds on gentle guided walks along well-established trails, allowing us to immerse ourselves in the natural surroundings at a relaxed pace. While some forested and mountain trails can be steep in sections, walks are never rushed and are suitable for those with moderate fitness. Gentle exploration ensures we experience the sounds, sights, and magic of the rainforest without pressure.

Altitude Notes

Our route takes us through varying altitudes, from tropical lowlands to highland cloud forests reaching elevations of over 3,000 metres. The diversity of elevation is what makes Costa Rica’s wildlife and ecosystems so spectacular — and while we ascend to high altitudes, the walking remains easy-going, allowing full enjoyment of the cool, misty forests rich with unique species.

Boat Safaris

One of the most unforgettable experiences of the trip is gliding silently along Costa Rica’s tropical rivers. During our time near Palo Verde National Park, we embark on boat safaris through mangrove-fringed estuaries, rich wetlands, and tranquil waterways. These safaris offer close encounters with American crocodiles, herons, kingfishers, and dazzling riverine birdlife, all from the comfort of a boat.

Birdlife Highlights

Costa Rica is a birdwatcher’s paradise, home to more species per square mile than any other country on earth. From the rich lowland rainforests to misty cloud forests, our journey showcases a spectacular array of avian wonders. Expect to encounter:

  • Resplendent quetzal – The shimmering emerald and crimson icon of Costa Rica’s cloud forests, a sight to treasure.
  • Scarlet macaw – Vibrant flashes of red, blue, and yellow wings as these majestic parrots soar across the Pacific lowlands.
  • Fiery-throated hummingbird – Jewel-like bursts of colour in the cool highland forests.
  • Jabiru – Towering storks patrolling the wetlands, a rare and unforgettable sight.

Mammals of Costa Rica

While birdlife is the jewel of Costa Rica’s ecosystems, the country’s mammals offer equally thrilling encounters. As we explore forests, rivers, and wetlands, we may cross paths with:

  • Northern tamandua – An agile tree-dwelling anteater often glimpsed in the canopy.
  • Hoffman’s two-toed sloth – A gentle symbol of the rainforest, lazing among the treetops.
  • Collared peccary – Wild pig-like animals roaming the forest floors.
  • White-faced capuchin – Lively, intelligent monkeys playing among the branches and vines.
