Day 1 : JOURNEY BEGINS: FLY FROM THE NEW YORK TO SRI LANKA

Your adventure to the enchanting island of Sri Lanka begins today as you depart the NEW YORK on an overnight flight. As you leave behind the familiar, prepare to embrace a land where ancient temples rise from the jungle, tea plantations roll across emerald hills, and wildlife roams freely through misty forests and golden plains.

Settle into your flight and let the excitement build — tomorrow, you’ll step into the warmth of tropical air, greeted by the colours, sounds, and rich culture of one of South Asia’s most captivating destinations.

Day 2 : ARRIVE IN COLOMBO: A WARM WELCOME TO SRI LANKA

Touch down in Colombo, the vibrant gateway to Sri Lanka’s cultural and natural wonders. After clearing immigration, you’ll be warmly welcomed by your expert guide who will accompany you throughout your journey. A short transfer brings you to a peaceful coastal retreat, where the tropical breeze and gentle rhythm of island life offer the perfect welcome.

Spend the afternoon at leisure — unwind by the pool, stroll through lush gardens, or simply relax after your flight. As the sun sets, enjoy a delicious dinner featuring authentic Sri Lankan flavours and ease into the rhythm of this remarkable destination.

Day 3 : INTO THE RAINFOREST: JOURNEY TO SINHARAJA

After breakfast, we bid farewell to the coast and travel south towards the emerald heart of Sinharaja Forest Reserve, a UNESCO-listed biosphere teeming with rare and endemic life. The scenic journey takes around four hours, passing rice paddies, sleepy villages, and coconut-fringed hills before reaching the lush foothills of Sri Lanka’s last viable stretch of tropical lowland rainforest.

After arriving in time for lunch at our forest lodge, you’ll have the opportunity to explore the trails around the property — a haven for birdlife. Keep your binoculars ready as you may spot Sri Lanka’s endemic species including the elusive Ceylon scops owl, only recently recognised by science, along with colourful flocks of laughingthrushes, drongos, and babblers. As the light fades through the forest canopy, the rainforest begins to stir with sounds that promise further adventure ahead.

Day 4 : INTO THE HEART OF SINHARAJA: FOREST TRAILS & RARE BIRDLIFE

Wake to the calls of exotic birds echoing through the rainforest canopy. Today, we delve deeper into the ancient wilderness of Sinharaja Forest Reserve, one of Sri Lanka’s most biologically significant and protected regions. As a designated UNESCO Biosphere Reserve, this magical rainforest is a sanctuary for over half of the island’s endemic mammals and all but one of its endemic bird species.

Guided by expert naturalists, we follow shaded jungle trails in search of the forest’s most sought-after avian treasures. One of the most thrilling experiences is encountering mixed-species bird flocks that sweep through the treetops — a dazzling spectacle of movement and colour. Keep watch for the iconic Sri Lanka blue magpie, a brilliant and charismatic highlight of the reserve.

Day 5 : JUNGLE ENCOUNTERS: ENDEMICS, LIZARDS & BUTTERFLIES

Our second day in Sinharaja brings further opportunities to explore its rich ecological tapestry. This forest is a living museum of evolution, home to rare creatures found nowhere else on earth. Today’s trails may reveal the melodious Sri Lanka myna, the distinctive Layard’s parakeet, and the secretive ashy-headed laughingthrush. We also look for dazzling species such as the Malabar trogon and white-faced starling.

But Sinharaja’s magic isn’t just in its birdlife. As we walk beneath towering canopies, we may encounter the cryptic rough-nosed horned lizard, blending into mossy trunks, and spot forest butterflies like the ethereal Ceylon tree nymph and the vibrant blue mormon flitting through sunlit glades. Every moment in this rainforest is a chance to witness nature at its most untouched and extraordinary.

Day 6 : FROM RAINFOREST TO HIGHLANDS: TRAVEL TO NUWARA ELIYA

This morning, we bid farewell to the rainforest and begin our scenic journey into the cool, misty hills of Nuwara Eliya, known as Sri Lanka’s “Little England.” En route, we stop at a traditional tea factory, where we learn about the island’s world-renowned tea industry — from the careful cultivation of leaves to the precise art of drying and blending. Of course, no visit would be complete without sampling a freshly brewed cup of the region’s finest.

By early afternoon, we arrive at our charming hillside accommodation, nestled among manicured gardens and surrounded by rolling tea country. The rest of the day is at leisure. You might choose to unwind on the veranda, explore the grounds, or observe the rich variety of highland birdlife flitting between flowering shrubs and tall conifers. After days in the dense forest, the fresh mountain air and slower pace of Nuwara Eliya offer a refreshing change of scenery.

Day 7 : HIGHLAND WILDERNESS: HORTON PLAINS & NIGHTTIME HERPING

Today we explore the unique landscapes of Horton Plains National Park, a windswept plateau of cloud forest and mountain grassland perched high in Sri Lanka’s central highlands. This cool, misty ecosystem is unlike anywhere else on the island and harbours a remarkable array of endemic flora and fauna.

As we trek across its grassy plains and through stunted forest patches, we keep our eyes peeled for sambar deer and the elusive purple-faced leaf monkey. Birdwatchers will delight in the chance to spot rare highland species including the Sri Lanka bush warbler and Sri Lanka whistling thrush, both famously difficult to observe. Other feathered highlights may include the soaring black eagle, the tiny black-throated munia, and the vibrant Sri Lanka white-eye.

Horton Plains is also a haven for herpetologists. The cooler temperatures and untouched habitats provide shelter for a variety of endemic lizards such as the pygmy lizard, rhino-horned lizard, and the striking black-lipped lizard — each one a gem of Sri Lanka’s highland biodiversity.

This evening, as dusk falls over the hills, we grab our torches and set out on a guided night walk in the lodge gardens. With luck, we’ll encounter up to ten species of frogs, including rarities such as Parker’s globular frog and the beautifully patterned Montane hour-glass frog. The nocturnal chorus and the cool mountain air create a magical atmosphere for discovering the island’s lesser-seen amphibians.

Day 8 : INTO THE WILD EAST: JOURNEY TO GAL OYA NATIONAL PARK

This morning, we leave behind the misty highlands of Nuwara Eliya and journey southeast into one of Sri Lanka’s most remote and untouched wildernessesGal Oya National Park. The drive takes us through ever-changing scenery, from tea plantations and rolling hills to lowland jungles and scattered farming villages, revealing the incredible diversity of the island’s landscapes.

Gal Oya is a hidden gem, far from the usual tourist trail. The park is wild, tranquil, and known for its unique ecology, hosting some of the island’s rarest bird species. Among the highlights found only in this region are the yellow-footed green pigeon and the shy painted francolin, both prized sightings for keen birders.

This afternoon, we head out on an easy birding walk with a local guide from the indigenous Vedda tribe, offering a rare cultural connection alongside remarkable birdwatching. The area is rich in forest-edge species and we’ll be on the lookout for various cuckoos, woodpeckers, and endemics like the Sri Lanka woodshrike and the Sri Lanka green pigeon. As the sun filters through the canopy, the songs and calls of Gal Oya’s birdlife surround us in a chorus of the wild east.

Day 9 : WILD WATERS & ANCIENT TEMPLES: GAL OYA NATIONAL PARK

Today we enjoy a full day exploring the remote and rarely visited expanse of Gal Oya National Park, a haven of both wildlife and history nestled in eastern Sri Lanka. This is a region where the wild truly reigns — vast forests stretch undisturbed and lakes glisten under open skies, offering an experience of serene solitude far from the crowds.

Our morning begins with a walk through thick forest trails toward the ancient Rajagala Monastery, a sacred site hidden deep within the trees. This lesser-known archaeological treasure offers a unique blend of cultural discovery and natural immersion. As we walk, we keep our eyes and ears open for elusive forest birds, spotting flashes of colour among the branches and hearing the melodic calls of endemics that thrive in this untouched wilderness.

Later in the day, we head out onto the shimmering waters of Sennanayake Samudraya, Sri Lanka’s largest reservoir, for a tranquil boat safari. This magical experience allows us to observe Asian elephants in a way few others can — watching them bathe, drink, or even swim between the islands that dot the lake. Along the shores, mugger crocodiles bask in the sun while a wealth of waterbirds gather, including herons, egrets, and fish eagles. It’s a peaceful yet exhilarating way to witness Sri Lanka’s wild side from the water.

Day 10 : INTO LEOPARD COUNTRY: TRAVEL TO LUNUGAMVEHERA NATIONAL PARK

After a memorable stay in Gal Oya’s remote wilderness, we continue our journey south to the drier lowland forests of Lunugamvehera National Park, a hidden gem that forms part of the greater Yala ecosystem. As the landscape shifts from lush jungle to sun-baked scrubland and open plains, we enter one of the best regions in Sri Lanka for spotting elusive predators.

Lunugamvehera is particularly renowned for its exceptionally high leopard density, making it one of the most rewarding destinations for big cat enthusiasts. But it’s not just leopards that thrive here — the park’s mosaic of forest, grassland, and reservoir supports a wealth of life, including elephants, sloth bears, sambars, and a rich diversity of birdlife.

After checking in at our lodge, we waste no time and head out on our first afternoon safari, scanning the golden light of the late day for movement in the brush. With luck and patience, we may be treated to the thrilling sight of a leopard lounging in a tree or stalking silently through the undergrowth — a perfect welcome to this untamed corner of Sri Lanka.

Day 11 : INTO THE WILD: MORNING & AFTERNOON SAFARIS

Today marks the beginning of two thrilling days spent immersed in the raw beauty of Lunugamvehera National Park and its adjoining buffer zones within the lesser-visited sectors of Yala National Park. As dawn breaks over the forest canopy, we set out on our first morning game drive, when the wildlife is at its most active and the air is filled with birdsong.

Our focus is firmly on the elusive leopard, which thrives in these drier landscapes. However, as we traverse dusty tracks and scan shaded thickets, we also keep watch for other fascinating species such as the stripe-necked mongoose, Indian flying fox, and herds of graceful spotted deer. After lunch and a well-earned rest at the lodge, we return to the park for a late afternoon safari, when golden light filters through the trees and wildlife once again stirs into motion.

Day 12 : PREDATORS & RAPTORS: A SECOND DAY ON SAFARI

Another full day of wildlife exploration awaits as we continue our search for leopards and other predators that call this rich ecosystem home. With both morning and afternoon drives, we maximise our chances of unforgettable encounters in different parts of the reserve, each offering a slightly different habitat and species mix.

Today, we also turn our attention to the park’s outstanding birdlife. Keep your binoculars close for sightings of the coppersmith barbet with its vibrant plumage and call that echoes like a woodpecker’s tap. Look out for the impressive Malabar pied hornbill flying low over the canopy, or the busy tawny-bellied babbler flitting through the undergrowth. Several birds of prey patrol the skies above, adding to the spectacle of this rich and diverse landscape.

Day 13 : WETLANDS & WADERS: EXPLORE BUNDALA NATIONAL PARK

This morning, we journey to the shimmering coastal wetlands of Bundala National Park, a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve and one of the most important bird sanctuaries in Sri Lanka. The park’s diverse ecosystems — lagoons, salt pans, scrub jungle, and marshes — make it a magnet for both resident and migratory birds, offering a completely different wildlife experience from the inland forests.

As we explore the park’s mosaic of habitats, we look for large flocks of waders feeding in the shallows. Likely sightings include the elegant greater sand plover, the nimble little stint, and the delicately poised curlew and marsh sandpipers. With luck, we may also spot a kaleidoscope of other wetland species — from painted and woolly-necked storks to the unmistakable spot-billed pelican, white-bellied sea eagle, and Eurasian spoonbill.

We return to our lodge for lunch and a short rest before heading back out for one last afternoon safari in Lunugamvehera National Park. With the golden light casting long shadows across the landscape, we have another opportunity to encounter the park’s iconic residents — perhaps even a final glimpse of a leopard patrolling its territory at dusk.

Day 14 : FROM WETLANDS TO GRASSLANDS: BUNDALA & UDAWALAWE NATIONAL PARKS

We begin the day with a final visit to the bird-rich wetlands of Bundala National Park, soaking in the early morning stillness and keeping watch for flocks of migratory birds. Along the water’s edge, we may also encounter basking saltwater crocodiles or catch sight of lesser-known species like the black-winged stilt and purple swamphen gliding across the shallows.

After a short return to our lodge for breakfast and to collect our luggage, we begin the scenic transfer inland to Udawalawe National Park, one of Sri Lanka’s most celebrated reserves. Arriving in time for lunch, we enjoy a brief rest before heading out on an afternoon safari into the park’s open plains and scrub forests.

Udawalawe is renowned for its healthy population of Asian elephants, often seen grazing or gathering at waterholes. But this diverse landscape also harbours golden jackals, monitor lizards, and, with a bit of luck, the elusive jungle cat. The dry grasslands and wide vistas make it a prime destination for photographers and wildlife lovers alike.

Day 15 : FINAL SAFARI IN UDAWALAWE & RETURN TO COLOMBO

Our final morning in the wild begins with a safari through Udawalawe National Park, a last opportunity to enjoy Sri Lanka’s remarkable biodiversity. As the sun rises over the open plains, we venture out in search of familiar favourites like Asian elephants and water buffalo, as well as the park’s impressive variety of birdlife.

This region is a haven for birders, and we hope to spot dazzling species such as the Indian pitta, yellow-crowned woodpecker, and the elegant crested tree swift. Overhead, several species of raptors may be seen soaring on thermals, including the grey-headed fish eagle, changeable hawk eagle, and crested serpent eagle.

After a rewarding morning in the park, we begin our drive back to Colombo, a journey of approximately four hours. Upon arrival at our city hotel, the afternoon is yours to relax — enjoy a swim, indulge in a final cup of Ceylon tea, or simply unwind in preparation for your journey home.

In the evening, enjoy a final dinner and reflect on the unforgettable moments, rare wildlife encounters, and breathtaking landscapes experienced throughout your journey.
