Kathmandu Durbar Square – Echoes of Royal Grandeur

Step into the heart of historic Kathmandu at Durbar Square, where ancient palaces, sacred temples, and vibrant markets paint a vivid portrait of Nepal’s regal past. Once the royal residence of Malla Kings, the square is home to the exquisite Kumari Bahal, the residence of the Living Goddess, Kumari—a revered embodiment of Durga. Admire the intricate wood carvings of Nassal Chowk, the former royal courtyard, and gaze upon the majestic Taleju Temple, a towering pagoda dedicated to the fierce deity Taleju Bhawani. Every step here echoes centuries of tradition, spirituality, and royal ceremonies.

Swayambhunath Stupa – Serenity Above the City

Next, ascend to the forested hilltop of Swayambhunath Stupa, known lovingly as the Monkey Temple. One of the oldest and most revered Buddhist shrines in Nepal, Swayambhunath’s golden spire glistens beneath fluttering prayer flags while its all-seeing Buddha eyes overlook the valley below. Surrounded by a complex of smaller stupas and shrines, the site is alive with chanting monks, flickering butter lamps, and playful monkeys, creating a mystical ambiance that transcends time.

Boudhanath Stupa – A Sacred Sanctuary of Tibetan Buddhism

Conclude your spiritual journey at Boudhanath Stupa, one of the largest and most sacred Tibetan Buddhist monuments in the world. Towering above a vibrant circular square, its iconic white dome and gilded tower are adorned with Buddha’s watchful eyes. Encircled by prayer wheels, colourful thangka shops, and Tibetan monasteries, the stupa hums with the rhythm of devotional chants. You may also witness monks in deep meditation or observe a traditional Buddhist puja—a prayer ceremony rich in sound, scent, and symbolism.

As the sun sets behind the valley’s rim, return to your hotel, your heart full with the sights, sounds, and spiritual energy of Kathmandu—a city where the divine is woven into everyday life.

After returning from Sarangkot, enjoy a leisurely breakfast before diving into a full-day Pokhara city sightseeing tour, where culture, history, and spiritual tradition blend seamlessly.

This breathtaking journey over the Himalayas offers awe-inspiring aerial views of snow-capped peaks, including Mount Everest, Makalu, and Kanchenjunga—an unforgettable prelude to your Bhutanese adventure.

Day 10 : DISCOVER THE SOUL OF THIMPHU – CULTURE, NATURE & SPIRITUALITY

Start your day with a deeply spiritual experience at Thangthong Dewachen Nunnery, also known as Zilukha Nunnery, nestled in the serene hills of Thimphu. Here, you are welcome to sit alongside the resident Buddhist nuns during their morning prayers, absorbing the calming energy and gentle rhythms of their chants. If you wish, you may offer tea and snacks to the nuns as an act of kindness, along with a small donation to support the nunnery’s activities.

Next, visit the School of Traditional Arts (Zorig Chusum), where Bhutan’s 13 traditional crafts are being kept alive by dedicated young students. Observe intricate woodcarving, painting, embroidery, statue-making, mask-making, and more. This is a perfect introduction to Bhutan’s rich artisan culture and creative legacy.

Continue your cultural immersion with a stop at the National Takin Reserve, home to Bhutan’s national animal—the Takin. This rare, goat-antelope-like creature is native to the Himalayas and has become a symbol of Bhutanese identity. Then explore the vibrant National Textile Museum, which showcases Bhutan’s exquisite weaving traditions and vibrant patterns. If your visit coincides with the weekend market, it’s a wonderful opportunity to mingle with locals and browse a colourful array of fresh produce, handicrafts, and traditional goods.

After lunch, make your way to the iconic Buddha Dordenma statue, one of the largest sitting Buddhas in the world. Towering at 169 feet, it gazes serenely over the valley and offers breathtaking panoramic views of Thimphu. The site is both spiritually and visually striking, a must-see highlight of your Bhutan journey.

From here, embark on a scenic nature hike from Kuensel Phodrang Nature Park to Changangkha Temple. This moderate, one-hour trail winds through fragrant blue pine and rhododendron forests, offering stunning views of the valley and a chance to connect with Bhutan’s natural beauty. At the end of the trail lies Changangkha Lhakhang, an ancient fortress-like temple overlooking Thimphu, beloved by locals and visited by parents seeking blessings for their children.

Round off your exploration with a visit to the newly opened Bhutan Postal Museum, which offers a fascinating insight into Bhutan’s postal history and showcases some of the world’s most unique and artistic stamps. This market features stalls run by local artisans selling genuine handmade Bhutanese goods, free of imports.

Overnight: Hotel in Thimphu

Day 11 : SCENIC DRIVE FROM THIMPHU TO PUNAKHA – THROUGH CLOUD-KISSED PASSES & CULTURAL WONDERS

After breakfast, begin your scenic journey from Thimphu to Punakha, Bhutan’s former royal capital. This picturesque drive takes approximately three hours and leads you through one of the country’s most breathtaking mountain passes—Dochu La Pass, situated at an elevation of 3,050 metres. As you ascend, the cool mountain air greets you, and the landscape transforms dramatically. Stop for a refreshing hot drink while soaking in the panoramic views of the snow-capped Eastern Himalayas, stretching endlessly under the sapphire sky. The pass is also home to the 108 chortens (stupas), which stand as a symbol of peace and spiritual awakening.

As you descend from Dochu La, the climate shifts perceptibly. The alpine forest gradually gives way to lush sub-tropical greenery, signalling your approach to Punakha Valley, situated at a lower altitude of 1,250 metres. Known for its fertile farmlands and warm climate, Punakha presents a different side of Bhutan—vibrant, lush, and tranquil.

Upon arrival, enjoy a peaceful countryside walk through the terraced rice fields of Sopsokha village, leading you to one of Bhutan’s most revered sites—Chimi Lhakhang, also known as the Temple of Fertility. Built in the 15th century by the eccentric Buddhist saint, Lama Drukpa Kuenley—famously known as the “Divine Madman”—this temple is a sacred pilgrimage site, especially for couples seeking fertility blessings. The temple is not only spiritually significant but also offers a fascinating glimpse into Bhutan’s playful yet profound take on religion and tradition.

To enhance your cultural immersion, stop by a local Bhutanese farmhouse for a traditional lunch or tea. Sample the delicious red rice and local dishes prepared with fresh, organic ingredients. This is a wonderful opportunity to witness the rhythm of rural life and experience genuine Bhutanese hospitality. Depending on the season, you may see farmers working the land—planting rice, harvesting vegetables, or tending livestock. You’re welcome to engage with them or even try your hand at some of the traditional farming practices for a truly hands-on cultural exchange.

In the afternoon, visit the majestic Punakha Dzong, also known as the "Palace of Great Happiness". Built in 1637, this architectural marvel is strategically located at the confluence of two sacred rivers—the Po Chu (male river) and the Mo Chu (female river). The dzong served as the seat of government and the residence of Bhutan’s kings until the mid-20th century and remains one of the most beautiful and historically significant fortresses in the kingdom. With its whitewashed walls, intricately carved wooden windows, and serene riverside setting, it is truly a sight to behold.

Overnight: Hotel in Punakha

Day 12 : JOURNEY FROM PUNAKHA TO PARO – HERITAGE, MUSEUMS & RIVERSIDE STROLLS

After a wholesome breakfast, set off on a picturesque drive from Punakha to Paro, a journey of approximately four hours that winds through Bhutan’s tranquil landscapes. As you ascend from the subtropical Punakha Valley into the higher altitudes of Paro, the scenery transforms into lush forests, sweeping valleys, and occasional glimpses of rural Bhutanese life. Take in the crisp mountain air, prayer flag-draped hillsides, and timeless vistas that make every mile of Bhutan’s roads feel meditative and memorable.

Upon arrival in Paro Valley, nestled among pine-clad hills and rice paddies, begin your cultural discovery with a visit to the majestic Paro Rinpung Dzong—one of Bhutan’s finest architectural masterpieces. Built in 1644, the dzong stands as a powerful fortress-monastery that once defended the valley against Tibetan invasions. With its whitewashed walls, ornate wooden balconies, and intricate courtyards, it embodies the spiritual and artistic essence of Bhutanese heritage. Today, it houses both monastic quarters and government offices and plays a central role in the famous Paro Tsechu Festival.

Next, ascend the hill to the National Museum of Bhutan, formerly located within the historic Ta Dzong, a watchtower that once safeguarded the Rinpung Dzong and Paro Valley. Designed in a rare conch-shell shape, the building offers a commanding view over the surrounding landscape. Although the original structure was damaged by an earthquake in 2011, the museum has been relocated to a nearby building where its treasures remain on display. Here, immerse yourself in a captivating collection of Bhutanese artefacts, including ancient weapons, religious thangkas, traditional costumes, textiles, ritual objects, and the country’s famed postage stamps.

Near the museum, watch local artisans showcase traditional Bhutanese woodturning techniques. These skilled craftsmen create beautiful wooden bowls and cups using age-old methods passed down through generations. If you're feeling adventurous, try your hand at turning a wooden vessel yourself—it’s a memorable way to connect with the living traditions of the Bhutanese people.

In the late afternoon, take a peaceful riverside walk along Paro Town. Wander through its charming streets lined with traditional Bhutanese architecture, boutique shops, and cafés. Continue towards the Paro Bridge for a scenic viewpoint of the Rinpung Dzong. As the sun casts golden hues across the valley, capture stunning photographs from various angles—perhaps even crossing the bridge for a panoramic shot that perfectly frames the dzong with the river flowing beneath it.

Overnight: Hotel in Thimphu Paro

Day 13 : SACRED HIKE TO TIGER'S NEST MONASTERY & TRADITIONAL BHUTANESE FARMHOUSE EXPERIENCE

Today is the highlight of your Bhutan journey, as you set off on a rewarding hike to the iconic Tiger’s Nest Monastery, also known as Taktshang Monastery—one of the most sacred and awe-inspiring pilgrimage sites in the Himalayas. Perched dramatically on the edge of a sheer cliff face, the monastery sits 900 metres above the lush Paro Valley, seemingly suspended in the clouds.

According to legend, Guru Rinpoche (Padmasambhava), the revered Buddhist master who brought Buddhism to Bhutan, flew to this site on the back of a tigress and meditated here for three months. The monastery was built in the 17th century to commemorate this miraculous event. Today, it remains a place of deep spiritual reverence, attracting pilgrims and travellers from across Bhutan and neighbouring Buddhist countries.

The hike to Tiger’s Nest takes approximately 4 to 5 hours roundtrip and is moderately challenging, but the effort is richly rewarded. As you ascend through pine forests dotted with fluttering prayer flags, the monastery slowly reveals itself—its white walls and golden roofs clinging impossibly to the cliffside. The breathtaking views of the valley below and the spiritual aura of the site make this a truly unforgettable experience.

Midway through your hike, stop for a traditional Bhutanese lunch at the Taktshang Cafeteria, which offers spectacular views of the monastery from across the gorge. It’s the perfect place to rest, reflect, and soak in the serene atmosphere before continuing your journey upward.

After descending from the monastery in the late afternoon, unwind with a visit to a local Bhutanese farmhouse. Here, you have the opportunity to experience a slice of rural Bhutanese life. Enjoy a soothing hot stone bath, a centuries-old wellness tradition believed to have therapeutic benefits. River stones are heated over fire and placed in a wooden tub filled with fresh water and fragrant herbs—ideal for easing your muscles after the hike. Alternatively, relax with a cup of traditional butter tea or enjoy a homemade dinner with your host family, savouring authentic Bhutanese hospitality.

    • Time zone GMT +6 hours (Bhutan is 11 hours ahead of New York during standard time and 10 hours ahead during daylight saving time)
    • Recommended airlines One-stop options include Air India, Qatar Airways, and Cathay Pacific. Our packages include one-stop flights, with preferred airline options available at an extra cost.
    • Best season The best time to visit Bhutan is during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). These seasons offer pleasant weather, clear skies, and vibrant landscapes, making it ideal for sightseeing, exploring Bhutan's rich culture, and enjoying its natural beauty. Winter (December to February) can also be a good option for those looking for fewer tourists and clear views, though it can be cold. Summer (June to August), while rainy, offers lush scenery and a peaceful atmosphere, making it suitable for those who prefer a quieter cultural and nature-focused experience, despite the challenges of the rain.
    • Visa US citizens require a tourist visa to enter Bhutan, which must be arranged through an approved Bhutanese tour operator. Entry requirements are subject to change, so travellers should check with the Bhutanese Embassy or official sources before departure. It is your responsibility to check and meet entry requirements before travel.
