The city of architectural magnificence. The capital of the Mughals in the 16th and 17th centuries, Agra remains the ambiance of a rich and elegant past. Immortalized by the Taj Mahal, the world’s most famous monument of love and one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Agra is set on a bend in the sacred Yamuna River and has held a strategic defensive position throughout its history. Both the Taj Mahal and the impressive Agra fort overlook the river, as do several important tombs and mausoleums from the Mughal period. The Taj Mahala visit (sunrise or sunset) is the highlight, a magnificent structure that easily lives up to its revered reputation. Modern Agra comparatively lacks the charm provided by other big cities of India’s north, however, its exquisite monuments make it an unmissable stop on any first-time tour of the country.
Fatehpur Sikri
Fatehpur Sikri is a small city in northern India, just west of Agra, founded by a 16th-century Mughal emperor. Red sandstone buildings cluster at its center. Buland Darwaza gate is the entrance to the Jama Masjid Mosque. Nearby is the marble Tomb of Salim Chishti. Diwan-E-Khas Hall has a carved central pillar. Jodha Bais Palace is a mix of Hindu and Mughal styles, next to the 5-story Panch Mahal that overlooks the site.
